Parents can turn to 'Sesame Street' for divorce help

We hope that our readers in North Carolina and elsewhere can find this blog to be an important source of information for couples who are considering filing or have already filed for divorce. One of the most important aspects of a divorce to think about is the effect that it will have on any children involved.

Children sometimes ask the questions that are the hardest for parents to answer, but luckily a beloved children's education institution has decided to step in to try and help. Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit organization that produces "Sesame Street," is rolling out a series of educational "online tool kits" that will help parents and young children get past the hurdles that divorce can pose.

The tools are designed to help 2- to 8-year-old children, parents, caregivers and other relatives. One of the most important lessons is a story for children that illustrates the lives of children who live with parents who split custody. Another lesson teaches children how to express and understand their feelings.

For adults, lessons include learning how to communicate with their children about the divorce and giving them support when they need it. It's important for children to realize that a divorce isn't their fault, and that their parents still love them.

Sesame Workshop employed the expertise of educators and psychologists to figure out what material needed to be addressed.

When thinking about divorce, it's important to consider how children view the situation, since they may still be confused about what is happening. Parents who are divorcing should know that they aren't the only ones going through this situation, and there should be no shame in reaching out for help in communicating clearly with their children.
