Divorcing an alcoholic never easy, but often right thing to do

Sometimes when couples in North Carolina and elsewhere get divorced, there are issues that they want to keep secret. Sometimes that is for the good of any children involved in the marriage, and other times it is prevent embarrassment. But sometimes tough decisions have to be made, and there have to be public consequences that will have to be tolerated. One of these is deciding to divorce a spouse who can't get an alcohol abuse problem under control.

Alcoholism is almost never an easy issue to confront or treat. But sometimes it has to be done for the good of everyone involved. One experienced family law attorney wrote recently that she has seen an explosion in divorce cases during the last few years where alcoholism on the part of one spouse is a major factor in the end of a marriage.

Since alcoholism is something that spouses may try to keep private, it's important to realize that if it is going to be used in a divorce it will have to be proven. It's not enough to stand before a judge and say that your spouse is an alcoholic. It will have to be proven.

The family law attorney recommends that a good strategy is to gather friends and family who can back up your account of how a spouse's drinking has damaged the marriage. Another good method to collect evidence is to get video proof of your spouse abusing alcohol.

Divorcing a spouse who refuses to get a handle on an alcohol problem is never easy. There are feeling of guilt and shame involved, because often times the spouse feels as if you are abandoning them. But it's important to realize that the spouse with the problem is the one with the job to do, and if he or she refuses, hard decisions need to be made.
