"Fox & Friends" tackles divorce issues

Some North Carolina residents may be interested to learn about a recent segment on divorce that aired on "Fox & Friends."

The show invited a legal analyst to come onto the show and discuss the importance of prenuptial agreements. According to the analyst, the most important advice for couples to take is to fully disclose their assets and liabilities when they sign a prenuptial agreement. He also stated that most people who seek prenuptial agreements tend to either be older or have been married once before.

Full disclosure of assets and liabilities is one of the most important requirements for equitable property distribution. Divorces are lawsuits in which the issues contested may be of fundamental, life-changing importance to both parties. Child custody, spousal support, property division and other divorce legal issues have the potential to radically alter the dynamic of a person's life if the settlement fails to decide in his or her favor. As a result, it's very difficult, and sometimes impossible, for couples to "disconnect" enough to discuss their dispute cordially.

In order to amicably separate, many couples benefit from having an impartial mediator oversee the divorce proceedings. Deciding which pieces of property constitute marital property and which belong solely to one party becomes more difficult the longer a couple have been married. In addition, it can be hard to settle on an agreement for visitation plans that don't leave one parent feeling marginalized. A family law attorney might be able to objectively analyze a divorcing couple's dispute to determine property ownership and help them reach an agreement that appeases both parties.
