DIY divorce costly in the long run

Divorcing without the aid of an attorney has become popular, especially when websites advertising do-it-yourself services have been appearing on the Internet. These services provide forms for petitioners to fill out in lieu of legal consultation. Although residents of North Carolina might be tempted to save money by eliminating the professional services of a divorce attorney, the process might end up costing more in the end, especially if one party retains an attorney and the other doesn't.

Communicating better with your ex

North Carolina couples who are divorced might be wondering why they still need to be communicating with their exes. After all, they divorced their exes for a reason. Obviously, communication wasn't that great in their marriage, or they would still be married. There are reasons why it is important to communicate with your ex, especially when there are children involved.

Transitioning away from alimony payments

Traditionally in North Carolina and across the nation, one spouse worked outside the home and brought in income while the other stayed home, took care of the children and tended to household duties. If the marriage ended, the spouse who worked paid spousal support to the one who stayed home until he or she could get on his or her feet financially. In some states, the courts even ordered permanent and lifetime alimony after a divorce. However, those laws are changing, and someone who is going through the dissolution of his or her marriage should plan for the future, alimony may no longer be paid.

Most prevalent divorce errors revolve around decision-making

North Carolina couples who go through separations often run into mistakes during the process. According to experts, these errors fall into a few top categories, and the emotional connotations of divorces may make them worse for spouses who aren't careful.
