Using social media websites in a divorce

People in North Carolina getting a divorce might be interested to hear that social media websites can be their friends or their enemies throughout their divorce proceedings. Although posts made on such websites may not always be admissible as evidence in court, they can be used as an effective cross-examination strategy. Therefore, people might want to take care as to what they post on such websites when they're going through divorces.

Some divorce attorneys advise their clients to take a break from social media websites altogether throughout their divorce proceedings. However, that might not be realistic for some people. Therefore, others advise that people monitor their privacy settings and keep in mind that just because they have their spouses blocked from viewing their posts doesn't mean that a mutual friend won't provide their spouses with access to their accounts. Generally, people should refrain from posting anything that could potentially be used against them in a divorce.

Individuals should keep in mind that everything that they post on social media websites has the potential to become ammunition in a divorce battle. For example, people should refrain upon posting comments about their divorce proceedings, such as divorce rulings, because they could end up getting back to the judge. Likewise, pictures that people post could end up being used to challenge their character. For example, a photo of someone raising a champagne glass to toast a friend could be misconstrued to allege that he or she has a drinking problem.

Divorce attorneys might be able to help people work through their divorce negotiations in a more amicable manner than they would have been able to otherwise. They might also be able to help them come to terms with issues such as child support, child custody, division of property and alimony.
