Benefits of being divorced for North Carolina residents

While divorce is often an emotionally draining experience, many individuals may be surprised that there are benefits to ending an unhappy marriage. According to some reports, getting out of a bad relationship can pave the way to happiness, improved health and a better chance that a new relationship will work.

While many associate the divorce process with depression, some research indicates that divorcees may actually be happier. According to a study by London's Kingston University, some women considered themselves happier for as many as five years following a divorce. Many of these women suggested that they were more content after the marriage ended than they had been in their entire lives. Also, many people who choose to end a bad marriage benefit from improved health. While a good marriage can make someone healthier, a poor marriage can do the opposite. Individuals in a bad relationship may be at higher risk for cancer, depression and heart disease.

Surprisingly, the end of one relationship may lay the foundation for a stronger relationship in the future. According to data from the Marriage Foundation, people who remarry are actually less likely to divorce than the rest of the population. Data shows that 45 percent of couples first-time marriages end in divorce, but only 31 percent of second-marriage couples file for divorce.

While going through a divorce can be a trying time, the end result can be beneficial for both parties involved. A lawyer may be able to help a couple mediate an equitable division of assets by explaining each member's rights, giving advice regarding the legal process and negotiating on the behalf of a client. Additionally, such a lawyer might assist the couple with other topics, which may include child custody, child support and alimony.
