Parents face charges for social media posts

North Carolina parents who are struggling to collect child support payments may be interested to learn that several noncustodial parents are facing charges after their posts on social media suggested that they had more money than they had claimed. Allegedly, social media investigation revealed that one parent even purchased a music studio rather than pay child support.

In Milwaukee, Wis., another parent had a 3-year-old son with leukemia who was undergoing expensive treatments and hospitalizations. The individual had paid less than $200 in child support payments throughout the son's life. It was just enough to keep the parent out of jail, but after bragging about their take-home pay on Facebook, the individual is now facing felony charges. Yet another parent posted photos in which the individual held handfuls of cash; this parent had only ever paid $100 total in child support.

Increasingly, attorneys and others have turned to social media to follow up on ex-spouses' claims that they do not have the funds for child support. Social media sites can serve as another avenue for individuals to investigate suspicions that an ex may be concealing assets.

An attorney can assist individuals in coming up with plans for child support and other types of support that each party feels is fair. Such agreements should take into account the income and needs of both individuals as well as the child's best interests. Ideally, parents can come to an agreement without involving the court system. In some cases, however, it is necessary to take a case before a judge in order to decide on the amount of support that is appropriate or to compel a parent to fulfill their obligations.
