Types of adoption

Adopting a child is a big decision that some North Carolina families choose to make. However, there are many avenues that couples can take when deciding to add a child to the family.

One way that a couple may adopt a child is through an agency. Agencies may be private or public. In most cases, public adoptions occur when the child has become a ward of state due to being abandoned, abused or orphaned. Most private agencies are run by either charities or similar social service agencies and look to place children who have been given up by their parents into permanent homes.

Couples may also adopt independently, which means that the adoptive parents make an arrangement with the birthmother to adopt the child once they are born. This type of adoption is sometimes facilitated by a doctor or clergyman. This option often allows birth parents to have some form of contact with the child after they are adopted. Adoptive parents may also find birth parents who are looking to give up a child. Both sets of parents then use an agency as a facilitator.

Finally, the adoptive parents may wish to adopt internationally. This requires parents to seek an immigrant visa for the child they are adopting. The foreign agency being used is also required to provide counseling for the biological parents, get consent and try to place the child locally first.

Couples who are seeking to adopt a child may wish to seek legal advice from a family law attorney in order to ensure that they understand their rights and to help navigate the process of adoption. The attorney may warn the couple of potential scams and make sure that both parties are following the law.
