Study shows lower divorce rate for people in health care fields

South Carolina individuals who are considering going into the medical profession may be interested in a new study that says doctors and other medical professionals are less likely to be divorced than individuals who work in careers outside of the health care field. Researchers in the study say this indicates that the high stress associated with medical careers does not necessarily translate into undue marital discord.

Around 35 percent of people that were surveyed between 2008 and 2013 who worked in other professions had been divorced. In comparison, only 23 percent of pharmacists in the study were divorced. Doctors had the next lowest rate among medical professionals at 24 percent. On the higher end were nurses and health care executives at 33 and 31 percent respectively, and 25 percent of dentists were divorced.

Researchers did notice a difference between male and female doctors. Male doctors who worked more than 40 hours per week were less likely to be divorced while those working fewer hours were more likely to be divorced. The opposite was true for female doctors. The researchers surmised that this is due to the greater difficulty women have in achieving a proper balance between life and work and suggested that more studies should be conducted to explore how this might be mitigated.

A parent in the medical profession who is facing a separation or divorce may wish to consult an attorney. There may be complex issues involved in child custody, and this may be particularly true if both parents work in the health care field. These jobs may have long hours and unpredictable schedules, and this may make working out child custody and visitation more challenging.
