After the Ruling: One possible future for same-sex relationships

Now that the landmark ruling by the U.S Supreme Court to uphold same-sex marriages is over and done, many speculate about what will happen for these relationships down the road. In the end, only time will tell, but one sociology professor has her own ideas about the future of equal marriage rights for all.

While the story discusses both the future and the past of same-sex marriage, most people are rightly interested in what to expect going forward after the ruling. The contributor does point out the small victories that paved the way for same-sex marriage historically, but it is her insight into potential future positives and future negatives that may hold the most interest.

Here are the points she touched on in the article regarding the national legalization of same-sex legal relationships:

-- Increased visibility of non-traditional families and sexual minorities-- Rather than disappearing altogether, legal battles over the topic may shift to the religious liberty terrain-- As such, opponents may attempt to challenge same-sex marriage on the grounds of religious freedom-- Transgender rights are beginning to get more attention-- Hate crimes against the LGBT community may continue to remain a problem-- Growing awareness that all members of society deserve respect and dignity regardless of sexual orientation

Attorneys practicing in the family law field continue to understand the unique challenges same-sex couples must face. While these couples can now marry and even divorce, they may still need legal assistance in these and in other areas of the law. In North Carolina, members of the LGBT community can find the help they need by speaking with a family law attorney.
