New laws aim to place children in permanent homes

If you've ever tried to adopt a child or are trying to do so now, you know that the challenges of adoption can be difficult to overcome. Long wait times, foster-care initiatives, and high fees can all be troublesome. On top of that, you'll have to go through visits with the facility and fill out numerous legal documents. It seems counterintuitive that the process takes so long, especially since so many children are in the foster-care system.

Legal separation vs. Divorce

When you are having trouble in your marriage, one of the questions you may have is if a separation is better than a divorce. With a legal separation, you'll stay married, so you won't have to worry about a long, drawn-out divorce. The fact is, though, that like a divorce, both parties will live apart and a court will still need to determine who is responsible for what in the marriage.

Get your share of marital assets with an equitable distribution

It's no surprise that divorce is a trying time; you're breaking off a relationship that you may have invested a lot of time and money into, along with your own happiness and emotions. You may share children with the person you're getting divorced from or you could have a family pet you can't bear to part from.

Same-sex couples and adoption: Finally on level ground

When you decide you want to adopt a child, you don't want your journey to be more difficult than others just because you're in a same-sex relationship. Thanks to the ruling in the Supreme Court that same-sex marriage is now legal, it's hard for agencies to turn away same-sex couples who want to adopt. What about those who had already adopted a child?

Party planning can be tough for divorced families

A divorce is a hard situation to be in, but what can be even worse is trying to decide how to spend holidays like birthdays with the people you love. If you have children that now share different homes, how will you decide which parent gets to visit on a birthday or how to participate in the event? Normally, your attorney helps you fight for visitation and custody, but your child will also get a say in what happens.
