New laws aim to place children in permanent homes

If you've ever tried to adopt a child or are trying to do so now, you know that the challenges of adoption can be difficult to overcome. Long wait times, foster-care initiatives, and high fees can all be troublesome. On top of that, you'll have to go through visits with the facility and fill out numerous legal documents. It seems counterintuitive that the process takes so long, especially since so many children are in the foster-care system.

North Carolina is attempting to make changes to help those in adoption agencies find the homes they need. This year, 2015, two bills were signed to help children in foster care. One provides the children safe care in the foster care system until age 21. Another helps make sure they can continue to participate in school activities in the local area.

During a recent legislative session, the funding for a new initiative was released and aims to help children be permanently housed with adoptive families. So far, the extra funding and initiative has helped place 25 children in permanent homes. As time goes on, the goal is to get even more of the roughly 10,000 children in the foster care system into a permanent home where they can thrive.

Out of the 10,000 children in the state's fostering system, there are over 2,000 who need to be placed in permanent care. With the extra time provided by the initiative along with additional funding, the hope is that these children will soon be housed with permanent guardians and families, where they can experience a normal home, school, and social life.
