Mother takes children, faces criminal charges

When child custody arrangements are made, it's expected that both parties will abide by them. Child custody rulings are legally binding, and if parents want to change their rights to visitation or want to alter child custody arrangements, they need to go through the courts to do so.

When parents don't do this and take custody matters into their own hands, it can cause problems for everyone involved and lead to criminal charges being placed on that parent later on. Take for instance this woman from Wisconsin who disappeared with her sons. She now faces criminal charges for fleeing with her children to Georgia. It had been expected that she may have been in North Carolina, Illinois, Texas or South Carolina.

The woman took her three sons out of school between May 10 and 13 for a short vacation to Texas, the news reports. It was after the vacation that they didn't return; the boys missed three visitations with their father. After two weeks missing, the public was called on to help locate the four. When the police found her, she was with her boys at a vacation rental in Georgia; she's been cooperating, they stated, but she has been limiting what she tells them.

In cases like this, family court is often used to work out the problems faced. If there is no significant reason for a parent to flee with his or her children, then it's possible that the person could be charged with a crime like parental kidnapping or even lose his or her custody rights.
