Legal terms everyone should know when talking to an attorney

Family law is a specialty field that some attorneys work in. This field deals with numerous issues relating to family and home life. Cases could include things like divorce issues, child support problems, and prenuptial agreement development.

As with any specialty field, there are some terms that you can learn that will help you better understand your legal rights and what your attorney is trying to explain to you in your case. For instance, if you're going through a divorce, you should know what marital property and alimony are. Marital property is defined as any property you or your spouse gathered during the course of your marriage. This property can be divided on divorce. Alimony, on the other hand, is a payment made from one spouse to the other to support the other spouse after divorce.

If you're seeking out a prenuptial agreement or have been served one, know that it is an agreement that both parties must agree to before a marriage. The agreement provides terms of the marriage and allows each to give up rights to each other's property in the case of death or divorce. If you don't get a prenuptial agreement, a postnuptial agreement is another option. It's the same, but it's signed after your nuptials are complete.

Hiring an attorney allows you to get deep insight into your case and family law. Court orders, settlement agreements, and contracts are all able to be handled by non-legal professionals, but to make sure your case is solid and that you're protected by law, working with an attorney is best.
