Get the child support your child needs

When you have a child with another person, it's important that your child has the right to know both parents and that you have the ability to seek child support if you're not in a marital relationship.

How is support established?

You must start by locating the noncustodial parent and getting his or her address, phone number and other information. At that point, you'll also need to have your child's financial needs and will want to show how much the other parent can pay.

How is child support determined?

Child support payments are created based on guidelines. These guidelines are designed to take into consideration how much parents can pay as well as how much the child needs.

It's possible to get a court to establish child support, but you can also voluntarily establish support if the other parent is willing to do so.

How is child support distributed?

You can have child support distributed in a few ways. Direct payments can be made if the payments are made to the Child Support Services department for distribution. Income withholding is possible if a parent wants it to come out of his or her paycheck. Interception or taking the money from a tax refund is also possible if the parent does not want to pay but is obligated to pay child support.

Child support can be complicated, but your attorney can help you work out the details. Your child deserves to have support from both parents, and child support is integral to evening the discrepancy between a one and two-parent family and income.
