What events end child support in North Carolina?

When a person brings a child into the world they are obligated to provide for that child financially as the youth grows into an adult. Generally, in North Carolina and many other jurisdictions throughout the country, a parent's child support obligation lasts until the child reaches the age of majority, which in North Carolina is 18 years of age. However, a child support obligation can end earlier if certain conditions are met.

For example, if a child becomes emancipated from their parents before reaching the age of majority, then their parents are no longer obligated to provide them with financial support. Emancipation can be obtained in a number of ways. A child may petition a court to be released from the care of their parents, the child may marry or the child may enlist in the military as a means of achieving emancipation.

In some cases, a child support obligation may be extended beyond the child's 18th birthday. It is often the case that a child may turn 18 while they are still enrolled in secondary or high school. In such situations, it is not uncommon for parents to remain financially responsible for their children until they graduate from their academic programs.

Parents can choose to support their adult children beyond the age of majority. Some parents extend their support of their children as their kids attend college. When parents agree to such extensions, they may still use the state's enforcement options for seeing their obligations fulfilled despite their children's ages.

In most cases child support obligations end when children turn 18 or when the children graduate from high school. However, different end dates can be arranged through the agreement of the children's parents. Family law attorneys can help ensure that any agreed-upon child support documents are properly drafted and executed.
